London Mayor considers major new airport for South East

London Mayor Boris Johnson has this week been looking at options for the creation of a new super-airport to serve London and the South East.

The idea behind the scheme is to significantly increase flight capacity around the capital without the need to expand existing operations at Heathrow. This is something that’s felt to be vital if London is to remain a leading world city, attracting future income from business and tourism.

Possible locations

One of the locations under consideration is at Cliffe on the Hoo Peninsula in North Kent along with an alternative site on the Thames estuary. Cliffe was also considered for airport expansion plans back in 2002 but was ultimately rejected on the grounds of cost amid a flurry of environmental opposition.

Public opinion

With plans for development at Cliffe back on the table, it’s likely that a new swathe of protests will be sparked from both local people and environmental campaigners. As a rare breeding ground for birds such as marsh harriers and Mediterranean gulls, it’s likely that feelings will run high.

The travel industry’s response

Along with tour operators and airlines, airport parking specialists in the South East are watching developments with a keen eye. Eager to snap up land around the proposed site of the new airport, they will be awaiting the outcome of the Mayor’s review with bated breath.

Commenting on what’s known of the plans so far, LCS Parking’s Director Adam Casper said, “the prospect of a state of the art new airport in the South East is a very exciting one. The project will offer a much needed boost to the economy and our airport parking partners in the capital will be watching developments with interest.”
