BA and Iberia sign merger agreement

The BA/Iberia merger, which was provisionally agreed back in November 2009, has finally been signed and sealed with the expectation that the deal will be completed by the end of 2010.

With both airlines’ recent financial struggles hitting the headlines, it’s thought that the merger will breathe new life into the brands, saving them a collective £350m a year. The partnership is also thought to be a wise one, as the carriers currently offer few overlapping routes globally.

Along with providing new hope for shareholders, employees and customers, the new company - International Airlines Group - will proffer a boost to UK civic pride by locating its flagship headquarters in London.

Under current proposals, both iconic brands will be retained running a total of 419 aircraft to more than 200 destinations around the world.
